I guess you missed the part that said military deterrence was the biggest factor to physical invasion (not my words, history).
And I guess you also missed the part where it was explained the Nazi attempt to subvert the country from within were thwarted by a long tradition of DIRECT DEMOCRACY and CIVIL LIBERTIES.
So the intimation that they were spared because they were Nazi collaborators is a false characterization of that history.
