Anyhoo, the antidote to all efforts to concentrate power seems to be direct democracy. It's the way a decentralized society organizes itself. And as the case of Switzerland shows it is quite an effective social order.
Even though the Swiss have a decentralized system they were able to mobilize over 250,000 men in less than three days and mount a formidable military deterrent. So the argument that centralized power will just take what it wants is dispelled. It's just not true. France was one of the biggest centralized powers prior to WWII and had the most powerful military machine in Europe and the Nazis ran over them in weeks. Centralized power didn't stop the blitzkrieg but Swiss political acumen and foresight did.
