Imperialism is about maintaining colonies, protectorates, and spheres of influence to garnish tribute from foreigners while importing raw materials and exporting finished goods. It can also involve enlisting the domestic working class to cohabit and police foreigners.
I'm not sure how that describes today's world at all. Neoliberalism is much more accurate in how today's world revolves around free trade.
