my point is that communism and other larger visions of society are a product of their social and historical context and implicitly refer to those contexts even as they pose unwieldy, abstract questions about a workers' paradise. which is why i restricted my point in geographic scope, to the west (instead of talking about "the world"). just as society changes, the visions of what is legitimate change. communism makes no sense in say 17th century absolutist france.
