The truth is violent crime has been rapidly decreasing for decades, if anything the reasonable inference is that we should be going the other way and increasing freedoms.

It is for the children. Safe storage laws cut down the number of accidental shootings by people 15 years old and under by 25%. That equals out to hundreds or thousands of kids not maimed or killed because of the irresponsibility of their parents.
In other words, this is nothing like the War on Drugs. After all, safe storage laws work and they are a minimal imposition.
