You are asking why don't I support the private ownership of nuclear or chemical weapons and then say that's not hyperbolic?
C'mon.
I actually think the regulation we have now is about as good as it can realistically be done. Violent crime levels have seen radical decreases in the last several decades and really I just don't think random acts of senseless violence will ever be completely eliminated from society. Thankfully it's an extremely rare occurrence statistically, despite the hyperbole and sensationalism that surrounds the issue.
Frankly I think it's a non starter issue for left politics. You are never going to get rid of the 2nd amendment and it's probably the last issue that the right can use to rally a lot of support, since so many gun owners are affected. Tens of millions of people represent significant political support and alienating them for an issue of negligible practical value doesn't make much sense.
