I'd say the first fatal mistake--and I'm basing this on some of the things said on 60 Minutes--was hiring locals for security.

Really? In Syria? Not every Syrian is AQ, but how were they going to be able to tell?

Also, when AQ flags started popping up all around town I'd say the solution wasn't to beef up security, I'd say the solution was to get the hell out of Dodge. At least as far as the ambassador was concerned re: living quarters.

Well excluding the homegrown security--as we should--we had a handful of guys there, yes? Seeing that we were smack in the middle of Al Qaedaville, clearly, not sure if that was "staffing up" appropriate to the threat. Although this is all hindsight. Overwhelming police stations in Afghanistan with this kind of force certainly is nothing new, but clearly nobody thought that kind of attack was coming.

Again I would have gotten out for a while until we knew it was safe but I'm Monday morning quarterbacking.

You only really need more than a hand-full of guys if you think you're going to be in a major fire-fight. Major fire-fights are not AQs MO.

I don't disagree with that I'm just saying if everybody was aware that AQ flags were sprouting up all around the neighborhood I might think of relocatin', ya know?

Neither was flying planes into buildings, but somehow Bush was expected to know they'd do this.
