Oh so lets enter the airports on the honor system? Good luck convincing pilots and attendants of that one.
I'd be far more trusting of a trained soldier with a gun than I would a TSA agent. I don't know if they need guns or not but if its going to happen regardless, ditch the TSA and give me a jarhead.

Regarding the OP, there really isn't much you can do about some wacko who decides to randomly shoot people as long as his record is clean prior to the event. I don't think the TSA need to be armed. I don't really see how it would have helped here. The LAX officers responded almost instantaneously and the fact that only 1 died and only a few were armed (as unfortunate as it was) is a testament to that.
