I think that is more of a human issue. Visual creatures. We like people to look good, we like ourselves to look good. Men are biologically programmed to be attracted to women...who are biologically programmed to be attractive to men. Women are objectively better looking than men, and this is by design.
Man or woman, everyone wants to look good. Women used to be more forgiving of men looking like shit, because they used to need mens' money. Now they don't, as so they are becoming pickier. And so now men need to be concerned with prettiness. So we see men going under the knife an order of magnitude more often.
Its very true that women are much harder on each other than men ever were. We just don't give a damn about the vast bulk of all this stuff women think they have to do. I would never notice a woman's shoes for example...and this is to say nothing of them matching with...whatever. Her footware would quite literally never enter my mind. Waist to hips ratio, big yes. Cup size...secondary yes. I would only take notice of makeup if there was too much of it, and it would be a turnoff. Hair style...unless its something completely garish...could not care less. Long hair>short hair. That's about as much as I care about it.
But women will viciously rake each other over the coals about this stuff.
I'm not equating the female need to be attractive to the male equivalent...I think biology established the imbalance there, not society. Males of countless species battle it out over the most comely females all the damn time. But I think its hugely unfair to blame the obsession with appearance on men, since women attach at least 5 times more importance to it, and I've personally never been convinced that women do all that shit for men. They do it for themselves, and for other women. They know that if they want to get laid its a matter of cleavage, ass shaking, and sultry looks. Not shoes matching outfits or whatever foolishness. Men don't care about that shit in the least. We like T&A. A woman could be dressed in a clown costume and have windblown hair from 500 miles in a convertible, and be free of makeup entirely...and as long as it hugged the right curves and was strategically ripped here and there...the guys would be all over it. Count on it.
The mens magazines, the porn, the strippers, my lifelong tendency to drool over Salma Hayek...this is all just fantasy. Its not real. Its not what men actually want, or care about. Well, some men do...but they're not a representative sample.
There's lots that can be pinned on men, but women wanting to look good isn't an example.
