The Phillies extended Chase Utley's contract before the end of the season. We're still on the hook to pay Ryan Howard 25 million a year through 2015. Jimmy Rollins will still be our most viable option at shortstop.

This team is so damn old and Ruben Amaro Jr. seems to like extending contracts for old fan favorites over going out there and acquiring talent for the future. I want them to re-sign Carlos Ruiz though.

I was surprises the Phillies were as bad as they were this past year. I thought their starters would carry them, they didn't...

I actually liked watching the Mets this past year.. They had a lot of good young pitchers. Losing Harvey next year will hurt, but they still have some good arms.. They absolutely have to improve their bullpen though. They stunk last year, and it hurt them. With a decent BP they could have easily finished .500..

Can't wait for next year.

Reports are Cano is looking for 10 years for $300 million..

I wonder if there are any teams out there dumb enough to pay that? I can see the Yanks giving him 6-7 years, but not 10.. They got and are still getting raped on Rodriguez's contract, I don't see them signing another 10 year deal, for anyone. Which means someone else has to go 9-10 years. Rangers? Red Sox? LA?

God I hope it's not the Mets.

It seems that the salary always grabs headlines but it agree, it's the length of these monster contracts that are really even more absurd. I think we'll finally see this stuff getting reeled in a bit. Not too much though.

Baseball owners especially never seem to learn. Unfortunately I can see someone signing Cano for 10 years. I hope I'm wrong, but over the years baseball owners have proven over and over to be one dumb group of guys.

Phillies just signed Carlos Ruiz to a 3 year 26 million dollar contract. Of all the aging vets on this team, he's the one guy I really wanted to see come back so I'm cool with this. Great catcher, maybe as he gets older he can fill as other gaps in the infield. I believe he used to play 2nd base.

Yeah, 8 mil a year for a 35 YO catcher? Seems like a lot, BUT IMO he's a good smart catcher.. And catching is thin in the MLB now. It's a good signing by the Phils.

He's also got an excellent relationship with our entire pitching staff. The importance of that trust between a pitcher and catcher can't be overstated.

SF Giants sign Tim Hudson to a 2 year contract.. Braves let him walk.. Which is surprising, Hudson is still a damn good pitcher. I'm surprised he didn't get more interest.

I guess there's worry he'll have trouble coming back from that broken ankle he suffered in that game against the Mets.. But I still think he's worth the gamble.
