OK Eynon if that is true that is even more depressing because that shows we're still stuck in the Cold War mindset, simply replacing Russia with China.
China's not going to attack us conventionally anyway so we can point all the ICBMs we want at them and it's not going to make a damn bit of difference.
Many people said what you are saying about Iraq--that the REAL idea there was to have a base smack in the region. But I say: to do what? Hit Iran? With what? We can hit them from carriers. Plus, Iran has more influence over Iraq than we do, which was an unintended but totally predictable consequence of our invasion since we took out their main rival.
Hit whom militarily (re: Iraq)? With what? Obviously our bomb n' boast strategy has been a dismal failure.
But I like how you're thinking: because at least you ARE asking WTF is the real reason we're there? 9/11 is way past its sell-by date--it never merited an invasion and occupation but granted in hindsight that's easier to say since we were all emotional back then.
