The non-profit classification doesn't hold much weight to me. They still generate revenue and just invest it in themselves. I don't think places like Stanford need federal funds. And if they attract poor students who can't pay, then those students who are apparently good enough to go to Stanford will just get public funds and go to a public university. This will force private universities to fund student tuitions, or risk losing bright students to public universities, where they can afford to go.
It's a win-win.
