The U.S. is an aggressive and violent patriarch.
If history is any indication, were the United States to withdraw from the international arena, an incomprehensible event, I've little doubt that regional and ethnic conflicts would erupt. Think the dissolution of the Roman Empire and its aftermath or the dissolution of the Soviet Union with the conflicts that erupted and continue to rage on today in some form or Yugoslavia, Bosnia, etc.

The role of the US is the same as any other country: To work to further the advantage and prosperity of its own populace. To hell with whoever else. They have their own countries. Life isn't fair.
