I never felt the need to attend lectures at university. It wasn't necessary - I just stole notes from those who did and studied the textbook.
When I'm paying $8000 a year to go to school, with my own money, that is my decision to make, not the teachers. I'd have been pissed if I was punished academically for not showing to class.

well that's absolutely not correct. maybe a few select schools do that, but every school i've ever heard of in NY and elsewhere requires a single math course for majors that aren't reliant on math.
