As for the above comment. It doesn't really punish, because in the end the banks still made money by ignoring or dancing around the regulations. It wasn't really effective. Nobody is in jail, or anything. What's a few billion to companies that have trillions in assets? It's just a silly game and showmanship in regard to the financial sector. Nothing is really prevented. It's just what you can lie about and get away with. Sometimes you pay a fine, most times you don't.

No. I said that the reason they were necessary then(clean water act) was because of the attitudes toward the environment, and that those attitudes are changing, and making those regulations less necessary, and eventually unnecessary.

And all the pollution that was here in the Us has just moved overseas. Nothing really changed, except Chinese people have to wear gas masks or whatever to go outside.

And the broader discussion was about government protection through law anyway. And I was arguing that companies or people just do it anyway, because the government retribution, as in the case of banks, is less than the profit made. So the only thing that ends up mattering is the attitude toward the act.

Because new chemicals are developed faster than the epa can study or regulate them. And because america is stupid, companies don't need to prove their chemicals are safe before use, its up to someone else to prove they aren't safe. So take an intentionally gutted epa that is overstretched and you'll see the results.
