If you go to a lecture and don't learn anything, well, you're kind of an idiot. And at that point the only way you get through is memorizing things for exams or whatever.

This place for example has taught me more than any class I ever took in college. Just trying to troll for absurd positions requires you to learn something about that position, and then try to craft an argument around those facts, even when you disagree with it or struggle to find a compelling argument. Why should I spend 2 hours in class listing to my teacher read the wikipedia about the iranian revolution, when I can come on here and troll for the ayatollah. I'll learn more, and because it's more enjoyable ill put more time and effort into it than I would otherwise.
It's disgusting how narrow the concept of education seems to be to you people. As if you can only gain knowledge from your assigned class teacher. As if a PhD automatically makes them THE BEST SOURCE ON EARTH to learn the material from, and everything else a student does is inferior. It's a terrible f**k culture.

I think we have come to the conclusion that class time's importance is major dependent. But why should we baby students? Let them figure out what they need to do to succeed. For some students their success is going to depend more on their extracurriculars than their classes.
For example my college didn't have a journalism program but did have a newspaper. Those who wanted to go to journalism school blew off their classes and spent their time working on the school newspaper, setting up the film festivals ect.
Likewise our school has a really popular and well put together radio station, KDVS. (Its where DJ Shadow got his start). A bunch of people who want to get into the music industry ignore their classes and spend a lot of their time at the radio station .
We shouldn't force these people to graduate with 2.0s because they are pursuing their extracurriculars that they enjoy more and are more relevant to the pursuit of their dreams.
