of course popularity plays a role, but there is a minimum level of popularity. bands that exceed that don't necessarily get an advantage. you simply need to not be playing secret house shows.

you'd have to be death think shitvana is more catchy than radiohead. we can be subjective back and forth all night if you want.

led zeppelin, king crimson, pink floyd. three counter examples. the vast majority of their music is not remotely catchy, much of it is complex and lacks any kind of pop sensibility whatsoever.
