OK got a rules question.
I heard during one game that QBs get a half-second break on the play clock. Basically, the ref is watching the play clock, and when it hits 00, he looks to see if the ball has been snapped. If it has, then the play is OK. But, that half-second it takes for him to realize it's hit 00, look down, find the ball, etc., means that the QB has a bit of time between when the clock actually hits 00 and he has to start the play. And, I've noticed it - I've seen the clock hit 00 and the ball is snapped a split second later, but no penalty is called.
So, here's my question. Let's say you're a linebacker and you time your blitz for the exact moment the clock hits 00. The line judge isn't looking at the clock, he's looking at the line. He's going to see you come across the line before he hears the ref blow a whistle for delay of game. So, you're going to get penalized.
While I'm pretty sure that such a call would be made in the game, if it happened enough, would it force the league to reevaluate their procedures? After all, per league rules (Section 6, Articles 1-2
http://static.nfl.com/static/content/pu ... Timing.pdf), delay of game occurs when the time period elapses - not when the ref blows his whistle.
