I also want to add that most countries have banned handguns and it isn't some logistical nightmare. Some slip by no doubt. But by and large it works.
If the US were to do it there would be next to no supply in Canada. People have to go there to get it - criminals aren't manufacturing guns in basements.

3D printing is a thing but it isn't something I'm worried about for now. It took an engineering firm a lot of time and money to make a working metal handgun. And its still expensive as f**k - $1 million plus for the machine they used. They figure future models will sell for five figure sums. So not concerned ATM.
