the height of Soviet Russia's economy came in early 1980s. why? because of oil prices. at that time it was 67% of exports. now it's 75% of exports.

because of shale gas bringing down energy prices the growth that putin saw in his first terms has slowed to a crawl.the entire economy is just based off of oil, and the place is horrible and corrupt and they don't do smart things with their oil money like norway does (everyone in norway is technically a millionaire now because they have $1 trillion almost squirreled away for a rainy day)

between one third and two thirds of the 51 billion spent on the sochi games, the most expensive in history, has been stolen

To be fair to both the water supply being not fit for drinking and the not flushing toilet paper down the toilet it is quite common across much of southern and eastern Europe. I know through my own experience that Greece and Bulgaria are exactly the same.

That being said, no excuse for that yellow garbage coming out of the taps.

Its a Russian plot to steal more medals. Give the rest of the countries horrible water and facilities while the Russian teams live it up in the nice places. I hear the Canadian hockey team is staying three to a room sharing one pillow. LOL at the Commies. If it goes bad they will not have the Olympics back for some time if ever.

It is no surprise that an oligarchy is bad for economic growth or development. It is hard to compete when the most powerful interests have free reign to monopolize markets and use underhanded practices to crush competitors. Russia looks like hell.
