Most partnerships are limited liability and "self proprietor" is not a meaningful designation. Do you mean sole business owners? They are usually going to be a LLC (I'll let you guess what the LL stands for).

The efficiency loss is next to nothing compared to the amount of money lost every year to negligent corporations. We are talking tens or hundreds of billions if not more. And this doesn't even factor in environmental losses.
