Its true. A black person couldn't sit on a bus till the 60s. A gay person was forcibly institutionalized and even imprisoned. That is 30% or more of the population right there. The cops did far, far worse things, as there was no way of keeping video evidence. You could be conscripted and sent to fight a war. Women faced even more rape and assault and murder as they do today. There were more ways for big companies to get away with chemical dumping, monopolies, scams, etc. There was less access to information and far more government secrecy.

There are more rights than before, less liberties. When I talk about rights and liberties I mean it in this sense:

Rights are things that the government does so that you may be free.
Liberties are things that the government does NOT do so that you may be free.

The problem is more laws than ever before, almost everything has been criminalized or legislated in such a way that noncompliance is a penalty. The militarization of cops, for example, can be traced almost directly from the war on drugs. Fear rules the day and it seems we've become a proactive society than a reactive one.
