It isn't different because the requirements placed on the cake people are not any different than they would be for a straight couple. The participation angle has no logical basis. You are not participating in the wedding in either case, nor do your job duties change between the two.
It is a very shaky argument that just doesn't make sense. Can a hairdresser deny service to a lesbian wedding party because they are "participating" by cutting hair? Can a company that supplies wine glasses deny service because the gays will drink from their glasses? Can I deny service because my herbs will be used in food served to blacks, who I hypothetically oppose? How does this apply to Jews or the disabled or any other persecuted minority?
It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now.
