The western concept of private property is what makes sure the cops and other government authorities have to go through mountains of red tape before they can legally search or stop you or that property. Yeah, this might shit all over your idea of a communal property thing, but I'll take it since I like to be able to call something I purchase, real or otherwise, with my own money "mine." It's human nature to want to reap the personal benefits of your own labor and consumerism/privatization lets people do that on an individual level.
