If by "big tent" you mean Nixon deciding to use fear of black people to get white southern votes (the "Southern Strategy") then yes, you are right.
That kinda set the tone for the modern conservative establishment, which in many respects was literally fermented by racism.
In 2005 the GOP apologized for it. I guess they realized bigotry wouldn't help them politically any more so it was time to drop the subject publicly at least.
I would say a majority of conservatives are bigoted in one sense or another, mostly against gay people and Muslims but black people and Mexicans get their share of abuse as well.
