Is this a joke? The EU even in its current cripple state wields as much soft and economic power as the United States. The EU is a global power that surpasses china and is on part with America in every sphere save military. People who think the EU wields little power are ignorant and reveal themselves to be wannabe generals who think power in 2014 is best dictated at the barrel of a gun.

Didn't we bankrupt Russia by keeping them in a constant state of war, finishing the job with Afghanistan in the 80s?

I'm wondering how much more money we can borrow to finance yet another military intervention.

Speaking of which, we're still in Afghanistan. 13 years now and counting. Current cost to U.S. taxpayers for Afghanistan: $700,000,000,000 and counting.

The EU plays an extreme role in legislation today. I remember a few years ago something like 70% of domestic policy was written at the EU level. I think people underestimate the EU because the organizational structure is Sui generis and it has little independent military capacity.

The EU has huge economic power agreed. The 70% thing largely depends on the country. It ranges from roughly 7% to 80% so the variation is huge. Basically though, the bigger the country is, the less rules the EU has control over.
