The 'militarisation' of British society

Nothing wrong with the armed forces being out to raise their profile and to support some of the people who are competing for charities like Help For Heroes etc, but I would view it as a deeply sinister and incredibly un-British development if they were ever used to act as policemen in Britain. That would be a sure sign that Britain was on the path to becoming a banana republic...

It's only a matter of time, considering all these cutbacks. Still, I'd prefer the army acting as police officers than having paramedics do it, for personal reasons which I won't go into here.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK though (the government tried to get rid of them in the 70s and the buggers voted to stay) so the fact that the army were out doing the job of the police then means that it is not unknown. Throughout the Victorian era militias made up of former soldiers and current ones dealing with local crime were common place and they were also not unknown pre-world war 2.

I really don't see how you can see it as 'un-British'.
