to a hindu, the cow is sacred. to an american, the cow is tasty. so what if americans don't eat whale? they do in japan, and they have for a long time. so what if they didn't whale down south before? technology didn't allow them to that doesn't mean they should be prevented from doing so now. not every culture has the same feelings about animals this way or that. the french eat horse, the chinese, dog. i am repulsed by these things, but I know that is a product of my culture, same as them. there is nothing inherently wrong with whaling. the problem with whaling was overwhaling to the point of near extinction
