I am similar to Winchester. I much prefer living in the country, while being close enough to travel and enjoy weekends away in the city. Toronto is an hour and a half from where I live, so it isn't hard to get there on a Friday and leave Sunday night.
I just prefer the more quiet, slow lifestyle of rural living. I like being able to throw huge parties without having the cops get involved - unless they stop by for a drink. I like saving money. I like having a huge backyard. I like knowing everyone and establishing relationships that span generations.
Living in the country does suck when I want pizza at 4 AM, or a beer at a bar anytime past ten on a week night... But I have far more important things to do with my time than go to a play, a pub or a museum. And going to restaurants and pretending it makes you cultured is a total prole move.
