If that is an "academic argument," so is saying that you get nervous when black people are around since a narrow sliver of the black population is so disproportionately represented in violent crime statistics. In other words, a glaring, massive generalization doesn't become valid just because someone decides to make that argument.
In any case, I would argue that a great many non-Muslims decided to attack the US as a result of 9/11, just not in the way you are thinking.
