i honestly don't believe those usually. some of it has to be chalked up to trolling, as surveys 99% of the time, if there is an option capable of being trolled, it will be trolled. and some of it has to be chalked up to people not caring or paying much attention to it.

unless these people think ukraine is atlantis there's no way anyone would just pick the ocean.

There are only 7 spots in the ocean around .25% of the sample size. Even if 100 people were trolling the overall data is statistically significant.

Other studies have shown that like 30% of American's can't locate the U.S. on a map, I'm not suprised that only 20% or so could locate Ukraine.

To be fair, geography courses are awful these days, because they usually consist of memorizing a country and their capital, if that. The only way geography becomes meaningful is through associating it with historical events

The really depressing thing is the lack of basic curiosity. I can rock geography not because some school forced it on me, but because I picked it up reading about whatever else. Not knowing is one thing, but literally caring so little about the world that you can't even find where you happen to be sitting on it isn't forgivable.

Maybe being forced into memorizing states and capitals completely destroyed their curiosity about it at such a formative age that there's no going back.
