I think it wasn't a grand strategy, but one they had in mind nonetheless. When your entire presence is like five hundred people with smallpox and nowhere to live, playing nice makes sense. But I have no doubt that they were already plotting how to defeat the Natives as soon as they found them. Once the historical divisions became apparent, the Europeans exploited them ruthlessly.
