Government being up in everyone's shit is largely due to technology. Had this technology existed in the past in sure it would have been used. So how do we save privacy without becoming Luddites?

I remember some years ago after napster but before torrents became a huge thing reading an article about how ultimately file sharing is becoming more and more easy and society will just have to tolerate it because the only way to stop it would be to totally forego any rights to privacy in digital communication, which we as a society would never accept.
