The recent violence makes me concerned. Has Putin painted himself into a corner domestically with all his rhetoric about protecting Russian-speaking Ukrainians? I'm not sure he can afford to remain uninvolved if violence spreads.

I'm fairly convinced he's fomenting this. Even if he doesn't plan on taking any more Ukrainian territory, its plain that Putin has no problem destabilizing the place as much as possible. One way or another, he'd rather wreck the place than see it move towards joining NATO or the EU.
Personally I think the cost of taking Crimea should be that Ukraine gets brought into the fold. Not going to happen, but it would be just dessert.
