Are we living through the rise of the police state?

With the revelations over spying (as revealed by Snowden[1], and by Kim Dotcom in New Zealand[2]), are we living through the first stages of a police state, are we already in one, or is enough being done to scale back surveillance powers and protect privacy?

i don't think we're quite a police state yet, but we are definitely approaching one. unfortunately i don't think there's anyway out of it. we've become culturally inclined to support it. it's not just a matter of legislation at this point.

yeah but both of those groups believe in the "tough on crime" mantra liberals suburbanites and rednecks just believe in a handful of different things that they need to be tough on.
