I'm revising my initial WW2 comparison. This is more like the anschluss of Austria than the Suddetenland. Suddetenland will be when Putin inevitably moves on to another one of his imperial claims where russians are a minority in a country that has no historical and cultural ties to Russia beyond being repeatedly invaded by them. If the West is not willing to face Russia over Ukraine, it certainly won't do it for smaller or more distant countries.

What's the business case for it? Seems that Russia is sitting on a giant pile of energy, and so letting them do what they will with Ukraine is going to be far more profitable all around than expensive sanctions and trade bitch-slapping back and forth...to say nothing of open hostilities.
In the end...its all about money. Not right and wrong. So where's the profit in pushing the Tsar's face in a little?
