This goes beyond bad advice. By the 90s it was basically part of the social compact: work hard, go to college, get good grades and you'll have the opportunity to find a decent job after you graduate. The fact that it all broke down in the late 2000's makes that boomer advice we took pretty shitty, but that's 20/20 hindsight. Like I said, the college path leading to a career had been part of the social compact up until recently.
