Although a good percentage of homeless are junkies and alcoholics another decently sized percentage have mental and psychological issues separate from substance abuse, some are veterans whose unfortunate condition is the result of their time in service, and some others are just those down on their luck who can't find work.
You can't help them all but giving to them every one in a while is in good taste. By dehumanizing the homeless you are lowering the value of being a human as a whole, this is something we as a species should avoid doing.
