Well, it's probably beneficial for the area as a whole in the long run. It is sad to see the old timers forced out of their homes though.

Generally yeah, it makes places better. But it also drives out the people who live there. And in some places, there are no other options for them - it is that particular slum or nowhere, because rent has gone up so much.

East Hastings in Vancouver is going through this right now.

I love gentrification. You don't have a right to live somewhere you don't own and can't afford to live. Its kind of annoying doing pro-bono work for clients that haven't worked in 40 years and live on social security but have a better apartment than the one I can afford because of stupid laws. I'm all for the right safe and affordable housing for all, but you don't have a right to live in manhattan. Plus, gentrification always brings better goods and services. I'm generally uptown and as much as people decry the death of harlem, I say thank god. The place could use a few more well run businesses instead of the bodegas that are so bad they are only worth stealing from, or the buildings stocked with 20 elderly people on social security that hasn't been maintained in a decade because the landlord doesn't make any more anyway. Everyone complains but all of a sudden the white people show up and the park becomes clean and the deli starts getting my order consistently right. You miss some of the characters and shit but in most cities there are characters everywhere anyway.

Actually I would pay SERIOUS MONEY to see Galt engage in a conversation with those idiots. I feel confident he could reduce them to tears in short order.
