no one is saying that 37K deaths is great and everything is happy. no one even was saying 37K was worth it. professor was just pointing out that it is lower than previous wars. and so the term "better" is appropriate.
if you got a F on a test where you had to match words with definitions by getting none right, and then you memorized what "relative" meant and took the test again, and got 1/1000 right, YOU DID BETTER even if you don't grok what better means
