what loss of high value ag land?
biodiviersity isn't necessarily have to do with GMO but rather "successful crops". when we had no bananas and they made a song about it it was because a fungus destroyed all of that type of banana that hardly grows anywhere anymore we didn't know what DNA was. the gros michel banana was the one everyone ate those days, as the gros michel was resistant to the panama fungus, until it wasn't. now we eat the cavendish, and, unless we can stop it through science, in the near future we'll be eating an entirely different species, and for years as they are regrown there will be a severe lack of them (the blight stays in the ground for decades i think). this is a major problem not for us north americans because bananas are more a treat that you sometimes have but in south america and other places people depend on them for calories
eradicating the fungus has proved difficult itself, but perhaps we can with science. in the meantime we need to defend against it. if there was a breed of GMO enhanced banana that attacked the fungus it would keep it at bay for a very long time. and yeah, one day it would come back with a vengeance, jsut like it always does, but we'll have different tools to defeat it then

My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.
