A prisoner exchange between 2 states is one thing. Which country is the Taliban the head of?
The non-negotiation with terrorists is not a new phenomenon. This US policy goes all the way back to 1803 (at least) when we declined to pay money to pirates in the Mediterranean to keep them from attacking our ships.
However, I did read another angle on this - one that I agree with. This could start a new wave of negotiations with the Taliban. Not for trading of prisoners, but rather for cessation of military action in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If this is meant as a measure of good will, and accomplishes that goal, then I'll gladly reevaluate my stance.
