I actually agree with you Galt that democratically elected senators, two per state, is dumb. They should be democratically elected to a body that represents the population or they should not be democratically elected at all. The weird half-measure we have is a bad idea.

The 17th should ideally be abolished so that the Senators could fulfill their role as representatives of individual States. This change would be offset by a far more democratic House. The Presidency would stay directly represented, so when he appointed SC Justices, the State governments would be the check.

What people seem to be missing in this thread is that how democratic an institution or system is, is largely subjective. Definitions of democracy tend to be quite vague and open to a lot of interpretation. So whether or not the senate is democraticly elected or not is completely the opinion of the individual.
