This seems like it's going to come down to if the Iraqi Army is still any kind of fighting force. If not it will be drones, then air strikes, then boots on the ground within a month.

I'd be OK with airstrikes if the Iraqi government publicly asked for assistance. As per the usual, there is nearly no situation where I'd be OK with ground forces. Not with the quarter million strong Iraqi Army sitting on their thumbs for fear of actually having to be an army.

Right now they are dogshit, and they should feel like it, having panicked and fled from a vastly inferior force. They've got a chance here to save some face and create an identity they can be at least a little proud of by actually defending their own damned country.

Of course we should assist the Maliki government. Have you forgotten about the massive f**k embassy we built in the middle of f**k bagdad. There were already reports that iraqi green zone guards were wearing civilian clothes under their uniforms. If the government falls its f**k Saigon all over again, last chopper out with the poor bastards that helped us clinging to helicopter skids. It would be an unmitigated disaster and any pretense of a victory in iraq would be insane.
