1999 and Dominik Hasek comes to mind... They didn't win the cup, but they were a 7 seed that would have in no way gone to the finals without Hasek.. Buffalo was a very flawed team that year..
Obviously having a good all around team is the best way to win, that's true in every sport.. But having a hot goalie, or a unhittable, hot pitcher in the WS can't be ignored.
