There's no doubt the US has made plenty of mistakes in the ME.. But to put all the blame on us isn't fair..

What the Europeans did during WW I, and then what they did especially after WW I by redrawing the maps of the ME yet again That's when the real problems started.

Elaborate stability at the expense of Arab liberty, and you'll understand how something as quaint as a Caliphate has appeal amongst them.

The people we ally with are controllable, the ones we aren't with, who incidentally are less monstrous, are less inclined to do what we say.

Looks like the US has gone for the latter, but they threaten its power by doing the bidding quite badly.

Which is why I don't see a 'Caliphate' as much of a threat, let them build it and have them distracted by duking it out with Iran and their Shia allies for God knows how long, is it really something we have to concern ourselves with? Other than making sure Israel is ok, even though they've got around 200 nukes, I think we've come to an endpoint in terms of political influence and its limitations in being able to shape Arab political aspirations to what we want, they're too wise to our shenanigans, don't want to adhere to our line.
