Bill in Bethlhem had a good point.

Our infrastructure is already on the verge of falling apart, and simultaneously multitudes of able-bodied adults are sitting at home getting welfare checks. Why not have them go fix our roads and bridges in exchange for the checks they get from the government?

Worst case scenario: It's less effective/efficient as some predict. Even if this is is the case, still better than giving them money to sit at home right?

It seems that to some, the only thing worse than government just giving money to poor people for doing nothing, is government giving money to poor people for doing a useful job. Makes no sense to me.

As much as I like the idea the fact of the matter is such that most of the jobs actually require a higher level of learning than they did years ago. We can't just go and hire anybody off the street to fill these positions, especially when it comes to crucial infrastructure (Remember that bridge collapse?). Infrastructure spending still makes sense to me but simply for the jobs it'd provide? Not really.

You dont need an engineering degree to dig ditches, fill cement or drive a bulldozer, Kane. Anyone can do it as long as they aren't overweight bums.

No, standards have changed along with licensing and certification. I'm fairly certain just anybody can't go to a jobsite and just drive a bulldozer around.
