i like that the article said jon oliver "dropped a bombshell" about the US incarceration rates. no he didn't, this is not news. it's horrible, but a "bombshell"? jsut because you, mr. whomever who wrote the article is a moron and didn't know that doesn't make it a "bombshell"
that said, my thoughts on this are that punishments are necessary but incarceration should be a measure of last resort for any non violent criminal. rapists and murders still need to be in jail or awaiting execution and whatnot, but thieves and drug abusers etc should get the lash. not only does this make a painful lesson, but it doesn't ruin their life by having them be in jail. plus it's not that expensive to have a whipping post and a whip and some guy who probably enjoys his job too much doing it
