Ya most of the big companies im looking at that hire new drivers start you off at $.25-.28/mile a and you move up to $.30-.34/mi after a few months. Since hometime isn't really an issue for me (just plan on taking 4-6 days off every few months where ill head straight to an international airport and hop on a direct flight to costa rica or dominican republic or something) should be able to get decent miles. My friends who are truckers are telling me will prolly avg around 10,000 miles per month. So first year will only make $30-35k or so. But $50k seems to be about avg for experienced truckers. I know they make more up in nd, just dont know how much more. Main thing that attracts me is the seasonal aspect to it. Im not a big fan of working year round.

Let's see what the math says. I'm going to assume that you can average 60mph per day while driving. I've driven cross-country in a car, and that's about right. I drive 80mph, but stopping to pee and eat will bring the average down (plus 60 is easy math). The FMSCA says that truckers can drive no more than 70 hours per week. That's a total of 4200 miles per week. Let's say you take 5 days off per month, for a total of 8 weeks off (rounded down from 8.5 weeks). If 52 weeks in a year, - 8 weeks off, you will be driving 44 weeks, and 184,800 miles.

At $0.30/mi that's $55,4040, and at $0.34 it's $62,832.

Not a bad salary, but it's only $18/hour or so.

Let me put it this way - I don't know any rich truckers.
