You know what else is troubling?
Post 9/11 everybody talked of how we had abandoned boots-on-the-ground intel for all the high-tech, sophisticated toys that were more geared to the Cold War and fighting a state-sponsored enemy or state itself. For all our satellites and electronic intelligence, etc., arguably none of it was able to detect this brewing attack.
We need to get back to old-school intel, so many said--HUMINT.
Yet what's the tip of our spear in intel right now? NSA spying. Thinking we're going to catch the next Atta because of an email he sent or a mobile call he made.
OBL stopped making satellite calls BEFORE 9/11 because he knew it wasn't safe and his place in Pakistan had no phone or internet for the same reason. They all know this.
Yup, it's like 9/10/01 all over again.
